It is confirmed that the Mizushima Coal Power Station Unit 2, operated by Chugoku Electric Power Company in Okayama Prefecture, stopped operation as of April 30, 2023. As a result, as of October 1, 2023, the number of units in operation has decreased by one unit to 171 units.

Decommissioning Units 1, 3, and 4 at Hirono Thermal Power Station
Besides coal-fired power, JERA (funded by TEPCO and Chubu Electric Power) announced that it will decommission Units 1, 3, and 4 (2.6 million kW in total) of its Hirono Thermal Power Station in Hirono Town, Fukushima Prefecture on October 5. These 3 aged units, fueled by heavy oil and crude oil, have been in operation for 30-40 years and have been out of service for 5-7 years. Unit 2 (600 MW, started operation in July 1980), which is fueled by heavy oil and crude oil, and Units 5 and 6 (1200 MW in total. started operation in July 2004/December 2013), which are fueled by coal, will continue to operate.
