【Database Update】Latest status of coal-fired power plants (July 1, 2026)


This is a monthly update of the Japan Beyond Coal database.
JBC has renewed the countdown indication to show plant numbers that are currently in operation and mothballed separately.
As of July 1, there are 157 plants in operation and 6 plants suspended.
Unfortunately, there are no plans to decommission any of the coal-fired power plants that are currently in operation or suspended.

Operating: 157 units
Mothballed: 6 units
Retired: 13 units
Planned/Under Construction: 1 unit

  • Tohoku Electric Power
    The draft environmental impact assessment for Tohoku Electric Power’s plan to replace the Higashi-Niigata Thermal Power Plant Units 1-2 has been made public.

  • Chugoku Electric Power
