There is now no chance for Nippon Paper Industries’ Yatsushiro Mill power station (Yatsushiro City, Kumamoto Prefecture), which suffered damage from the July Kumamoto earthquake, including the collapse of a chimney, to resume operation of its in-house thermal power plant. (However, the power unit’s status in the JBC database has not been altered because this is an uncommon circumstance.) The Ministry of Economy, Trade, and Industry (METI) has released the findings of a survey it carried out on chimneys at thermal power generation facilities in response to this occurrence in an effort to prevent damage and avoid future incidents. The ministry is requesting operators to make urgent repairs when damage or deterioration to chimneys is verified.
