【News】JCI calls for the Japanese government to adopt an ambitious 2035 target

On July 8th, the Japan Climate Initiative (JCI) released its message “JCI calls on the Japanese government to set an ambitious 2035 target consistent with the 1.5℃ goal”.

Currently, greenhouse gas reduction targets for the 7th Strategic Energy Plan and the next NDC are under discussion, both extremely important in determining Japan’s future climate change measures. Taking this important opportunity, JCI submitted the message and a list of endorsing organizations to the Government (Prime Minister Kishida, and Ministers of each ministry and agency).

This message calls on the Japanese government to set an ambitious NDC to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 66% or more in 2035 – emphasizing that the 7th Strategic Energy Plan should be designed to achieve that target – as well as to maximize the introduction of renewable energy and the improvement of energy efficiency. It is endorsed by 216 organizations (153 companies, 5 local governments, 6 universities and research institutes, 52 organizations and NGOs), including the Japan Beyond Coal partners. Among those endorsing the message are representatives from hard-to-abate industries such as steel and transportation, as well as the Japan Climate Leaders’ Partnership (JCPL), a group of companies working to develop a sustainable decarbonized society, highlighting the number and range of actors that have explicitly called for the phase-out of coal-fired power by 2035.
