【Database Update】 Latest status of coal-fired power plants (January 1, 2025)


As of January 1, 2024, the number of operating units is same as last month.

Operating (including mothballed): 167 Units
Planned (including under construction): 1 Units
Retired: 9 Units

JERA’s Taketoyo Thermal Power Plant Unit 5, which has been stopped since the January 2024 explosion, is scheduled to restart operation in stages in early January 2025. Residents living in Taketoyo town are opposed to the resumption of operation.

[Other Information]

  • Suzukawa Energy Center : Suzukawa Energy Center, which has switched from coal to 100% biomass-fired power generation, has been forced to review its business due to the problem in procuring biomass fuel. Currently, it is stopped and no announcement about its future plan.
  • Maizuru Power Station of Kansai Electric Power Co.: Japan CCS Co. held a ceremony to construct a facility at Tomakomai City for a demonstration test in which CO2 emitted from the Maizuru Thermal Power Station will be liquefied, transported by specially designed ship, and stored in Tomakomai, Hokkaido.(Japan CCS’s PR, written in Japanese)
