【Database Update】Latest status of coal-fired power plants (April 1, 2024)

Operating: 169 Units
Planned (including under construction): 1 Units
Retired: 7 Units

Two units of Summit Onahama S Power were shut down at the end of March, so the number of operating units as of April 1, 2024 has been reduced to 169. JERA’s Taketoyo Thermal Power Station Unit 5 continues to be shut down due to the fire accident, and J-POWER has announced that operation of the Tachibanawan Thermal Power Plant Unit 1 has been suspended since February 15, 2024 due to a steam leak.

Media reported that JERA would start a demonstration test of 20% ammonia co-firing at Hekinan Thermal Power Station Unit 4 (Hekinan City, Aichi Prefecture) on March 26, but overseas reports have surfaced that the start of the demonstration test has been postponed. It has not been confirmed whether the demonstration test has actually started.

*On the afternoon of April 1, JERA announced it has started of ammonia co-firing demonstration testing at its Hekinan Thermal Power Plant.
