【Database Update】Latest status of coal-fired power plants (April 1, 2025)


As of April 1, 2025, the number of operating units has decreased by 2 units from last month to 165 units, due to the shutdown of Matsushima Power Station Unit 1 and Tosa Power. In addition, the number of mothballed units increased by 1 unit following the suspension of Matsushima Power Station Unit 2.

●Tsuruga Thermal Power, expand biomass co-firing ratio
Construction of facilities such as eight storage silos, conveyors, and other facilities associated with the expansion of co-firing of biomass at the Hokuriku Electric Power Company’s Tsuruga Thermal Power Station Unit 2 (Tsuruga City, Fukui Prefecture) was reported. Hokuriku Electric Power increased Unit 2’s biomass co-firing ratio to 15% in November 30, 2024. Black pellets will be introduced after 2025 (currently using white pellets). It is expected to generate 750 GWh of electricity per year and reduce CO2 emissions by 500,000 tons per year.

●JERA starts commercial operation of the Goi Thermal Power Station Unit 3
Commercial operation of Goi Thermal Power Station Unit 3 (780 MW) began on March 1, 2025. As a result, all of the units from 1 to 3 in Goi Thermal Power Station have commenced commercial operation.

●JERA announces plan to enter power business for data centers
It was reported (article written in Japanese) that JERA is planning to consider locating data centers next to existing gas-fired power plants in order to meet the increased demand for electricity associated with the anticipated construction of new data centers in Japan.

●Environmental assessment: Toyama Shinko Thermal Power, LNG-fired Unit 2
The LNG-fired Unit 2 of Toyama Shinko Thermal Power Station has been undergoing environmental impact assessment (EIA), and Kiko Network submitted an opinion letter on this construction plan in response to a request for public comments by March 31.
