【Database Update】 Latest status of coal-fired power plants (August 1, 2024)


Japan Beyond Coal database update as of August 1.

Operating: 168 Units
Planned (including under construction): 1 Units
Retired: 8 Units

Karita Power Station New 1 (Fukuoka Kanda-machi, 360MW), which is operated by Kyushu Electric Power, has become “mothballed” as was scheduled for the end of July 2024. Pease refer to the Summary (PDF) for more information on the mothballed units.

The roadmap for the coal-fired power plants that won in the Long-Term Decarbonization Power Source Auction was posted (this information is available only in Japanese) on July 22. Note that all of the projects are scheduled to begin co-firing operation near 2030.

・Hokkaido Electric Power, Tomato-Atsuma Power Station Unit 4, Ammonia co-firing(Planning to start 20% co-firing in FY2030)
・Kobelco Power, Kobe Power Station Unit 1 and 2, Ammonia co-firing (Planning to start 20% co-firing in FY2029)
・Miike Power Station Corporation, Miike Power Station Unit 2 and 3, Hydrogen co-firing (Planning to start 35% co-firing in FY2029)
・JERA Hekinan Power Station Unit 4 and 5, Ammonia co-firing (Planning to start 20% co-firing in FY2027)
