【Database Update】Latest status of coal-fired power plants (May 1, 2023)


Japan Beyond Coal database update:

As of May 1, 170 coal-fired power units are currently operating in Japan.

Operating: 170 Units
Planned (including under construction): 4 Units
Retired: 3 Units

<Other Information>

Shikoku Electric Power is scheduling to start operation of the Saijo Power Station Unit 1 (500 MW) in June 2023, so we continue to monitor its progress.

Daiwa House Industry Co., Ltd. has announced that it has acquired management rights to the Hibikinada Thermal Power Station (Kitakyushu, 112 MW) and will convert the plant from its current coal/biomass co-firing to a 100% biomass-fired power plant. The news release (written in Japanese)  indicates that Daiwa House aims to end coal co-firing in the plant by FY2024 and restart operation in April 2026.
